Sagres Surf Culture 2015

Sagres Surf Culture 2015 took place in May, in the Portugal southwest coast village of Sagres. Memmo Baleeira Hotel was a perfect venue for three days of exhibitions, lectures and talks. The sharing spirit, the guest’s knowledge and the creative contribute of the featured artists delivered, once again, a unique experience within the European surfing scene.

The first day of Sagres Surf Culture witnessed the collective exhibit opening and the documentary “The Old, The Young & The Sea” showing, with the presence of Andreas Jaritz, producer and co-director of the film, in Warung Bar. Saturday was lectures day in Sagres Surf Culture. The first keynote speaker of the three different discussion panels, Henrique Balsemão, remembered his role as journalist, TV producer and event organizer in the ´80 and ´90s, described his recent work at the Monte Velho Eco Resort and draw attention to sustainability related issues in the Costa Vicentina area. The traveller, writer and photographer Bruno Garrudo presented his acclaimed book “Deambulações” and also expressed his views on sustainability and travelling. Design was the main subject of the second panel of the day and started with the university professor Pedro Carvalho de Almeida talking about “Design, Identity and Memory in the context of cultural diversity”. In turn, type fonts designer Mário Feliciano inspired the audience under the motto “Surf, Letters and Rock ´N´ Roll” about his font type creations. “It’s only typography but I like it” – and so did everyone. The environmentalist and big wave rider João de Macedo and Nomad Earth’s Andreas Jaritz closed the lectures day. Macedo shared his paper on the value of the waves, world surfing reserves and ocean culture, while the Austrian producer explained the movie “The Old, The Young & The Sea” making of process. The night ended with an acoustic concert of We Bless This Mess and a party in the Warung Bar.

Sagres Surf Culture was wrapped up sunday morning with an informal talk between the spectators and some of the featured artists, Pedro Duarte Jorge, Lizzy, Nuno Lorena, João Viegas, Filippo Fiumani, Karo Krassel and Uwe Kluba. A mention also for the Laveta Heartmade EyeweART Project, that brought to the event an original exhibit with the work of some Sagres Surf Culture previous editions artists. Mário Belém, Miguel RAM, João Rei, Gonçalo Mar, André Leal, Gemeniano Cruz and Lizzy created Laveta costumized glasses with their artwork.

Sagres Surf Culture 2015 was organized by João Rei (Surfactory Design Studio) and by the Câmara Municipal de Vila do Bispo. It had the logistic sponsoring of memmo Baleeira Hotel and the sponsoring of Vans, Rhythm, Nixon e RVCA. The event partners were Lars Jansen, Onírica, BF, DOP, Imagem Pública, Monobloco, LCPA, Posca, Warung, RetroSailor, Laveta. ETIC Algarve was the event official school. The media partners were SURFPortugal, Zero Emag, Stick2Target, Staf Magazine, FUEL TV, Vert and Puro Feeling.
